Toyota unveiled an extraordinary overlanding Tacoma at SEMA which operates on hydrogen power while producing water as a byproduct. Meet the Tacoma H2-Overlander Concept, a 547-horsepower electric beast powered by Toyota’s advanced fuel-cell tech. Powertrain & Performance Highlights

The H2-Overlander operates with a hydrogen fuel-cell stack that originates from the Toyota Mirai and contains a 24.9 kWh lithium-ion battery and three hydrogen storage tanks which are integrated into the frame rails. The engine produces 547 horsepower when combined with the other engine which makes it the most powerful Tacoma ever built.

The vehicle uses a 302 hp front motor and a 252 hp rear motor which run at separate RPM levels to achieve peak torque performance. The vehicle features a front limited-slip differential together with a rear electronic locker system which delivers traction during all driving conditions. The vehicle's design eliminates the need for a transfer case and driveshaft because power distribution to all wheels happens instantly which prevents the vehicle from getting stuck.

The three tanks allow for fast hydrogen refueling which requires only a few minutes to complete thus extending range instantly without needing the long charging times of standard EV systems.

Toyota created an off-road beast that also functions as an environmentally friendly truck. The H2-Overlander features TRD long-travel suspension with Fox 2.5 Performance Elite Series shocks and 35-inch all-terrain tires mounted on 17-inch Method Race wheels. The Tundra-sourced front brakes provide stopping power that enables the vehicle to manage its increased weight and power output.

The TRD brand delivers its signature combination of strength and fashionable design to this product. The Panhard bar together with lower control arms and skid plate and recovery hooks display blue accents which reveal the vehicle's combination of clean energy and powerful capability.


Off-Grid Overlanding Features

  • 15 kW Onboard Power Output: The truck includes two NEMA 14-50 outlets which let you power your entire campsite with lights tools and appliances and simultaneously charge two electric vehicles.
  • Water Recovery System: The fuel-cell’s only byproduct is water and Toyota engineered a patent-pending filtration system to collect and purify that output. The system generates 14 gallons of filtered water from each complete hydrogen tank which can be used for field washing and showering.
  • Hydrogen-Powered Cooking: A slide-out grille runs directly on hydrogen from the tanks, sitting next to a Dometic fridge for an entirely self-sustained kitchen setup.
  • The Pop-Top Camper features a bed-mounted pop-top tent which converts your truck into a portable basecamp and carbon-fiber storage panels that keep your gear organized and lightweight.
  • Rugged Add-Ons: The vehicle features heavy-duty bumpers and recovery boards and an integrated winch and full perimeter lighting system for off-road capability.
